The world of Esports is extremely popular for young people with around 81% of 12 to 15 year olds playing video games for nearly 12 hours per week on average according to Pearson. The number for female gamers aged 5-15 increased 11% from 2018. The unmissable rise of Esports and the role it can play in education took a huge step forward in 2020 when the British Esports Federation teamed up with global education publisher Pearson to develop the first esports BTEC qualification of its kind in the world.

With strong links to STEAM subjects, the team-based activity promotes personal growth and encourages transferable skills to be developed in preparation for their future careers. The under-35s demographic is driving the Esports industry and their increasing engagement with the digital world has ensured traditional methods within education will need adapting to help manage a global skills gap many industries are facing with such a rapid growth of areas like Esports.

So what skills does Esports exactly help develop?

When implemented in moderation alongside a balanced lifestyle and curriculum, Esports can really go a long way in finding new ways to engage students and in allowing them to use their own skills and interests to carve a pathway to jobs we don't even know exist yet.
