Unleash your inner rockstar!

The Keytar Invention Launchpad is more than just an assembly kit – it’s your first mission on a lifelong journey of invention!

This hands-on kit includes everything you need to build a playable 6-key keytar using everyday materials and a Makey Makey.

Every Invention Launchpad comes with a vibrant ’zine featuring step-by-step instructions, fascinating background facts, and awesome insights into inventing with simple circuits. Scan QR codes to access bonus content and loads of ideas for creative project hacks and mods.

Once you’ve built your Keytar, connect it to our exclusive online app and jam out like the DIY rockstar that you are!

You’ll get a hands-on introduction to simple circuits, digital inputs and outputs, and musical sound effects, but the fun doesn’t end when the build is completed.

Assembling it was just the beginning! Like all Invention Launchpads, your Keytar is designed to be reinvented. Rebuild it using different materials, remix the design, add a foot pedal for funky sound effects, lay down a drum beat, and explore all kinds of creative performance hacks.

Curriculum Alignment

Keytar Invention Launchpad
  • Computing (Key Stage 2 & 3 – Physical Computing):

Meets Objective: "Design, write and debug programs that control or simulate physical systems." By building the Keytar, students create a bespoke controller that translates physical interactions into digital MIDI or sound outputs, allowing them to see how software reacts to custom-built hardware.

  • Science (Key Stage 2 – Electricity):

Meets Objective: "Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit." The Keytar functions as a series of tactile switches; students learn that by touching the conductive "keys" while grounded, they are completing a circuit loop, which is essential for the Makey Makey to register a signal.

  • Design and Technology (Key Stage 2 & 3 – Design and Make):

Meets Objective: "Apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products." This project requires students to integrate electronics (conductive tape and wires) into a cardboard structure, forcing them to iterate on their design to ensure the keys are both ergonomically placed and electrically functional.
